Chapter Eight
With last-minute items to be purchased for the party he and Jonas were having that evening, Jimmy was downtown going from one shop to another. As he was heading back to his car with an armful of packages, he glanced toward the newest stores in town. They were side by side, their doors painted bright colors, one bright apple green and the other aquamarine. The green door belonged to a coffee shop, the other to a music store.
As Jimmy stepped closer, he read the menu board placed in the window. French vanilla cappuccino. Yum. He glanced to his car, which was about fifty feet away, and back.
The door opened, and the tall, slender man Jimmy had first mistaken for a woman stood there with a warm smile on his beautiful face. His long, rusty-brown hair was loose, with a long braid hanging down the right side from a center part.
âLet me help you with those. Whereâs your car?â
âRight down there. Itâs the robinâs-egg-blue one.â
âAh, very pretty. I was admiring it earlier,â the man said as he took most of the packages and they began to walk toward Jimmyâs car. âMy nameâs Regal Brown. The stores are mine. Whatâs your name?â
âIâm Jimmy Doyle. Iâve seen you a few times, but I didnât know it was you who was opening the stores. Are you a musician?â He pulled the fob from his pocket and unlocked the car. They loaded the packages into the backseat.
âI am. Iâll be both selling instruments and teaching people how to use them. Iâve already acquired several students. The library also contacted me to hold evening classes for seniors.â
Jimmy was impressed. âYouâve certainly been busy.â
âYouâre the police chiefâs mate, arenât you?â
âI am.â They were walking back toward the coffee shop. Once inside, the wonderful scents of coffee reached his nose. He inhaled deeply. âAh, I love how it smells in here.â There were two people behind the counter. Jimmy hurried to the counter. âCan I get a large French vanilla cappuccino please?â
When the barista would have asked for the payment, Regal spoke. âItâs on me. My treat. Now, why donât we sit down over here by the window and we can chat. Our drinks will be brought to us. Iâve met a lot of people, but Iâm still working on making friends. Not everyone clicks.â
âThatâs true,â Jimmy agreed as he walked to the small round table in front of the window and took a seat. The chair was more comfortable than it appeared. Or he was just glad to be off his aching feet. The babies were due any day now, and their births couldnât happen soon enough. âMost of the people in Wildflower are friendly. Iâve been here a few years. It took me a while, but Iâve made many good friends. I had some issues to work through. Otherwise, it probably wouldnât have taken so long.â
One of the baristas arrived with their drinks and a plate with an assortment of baked delicacies, as well as small plates on which to place his choices.
