Chapter Eight

With last-minute items to be purchased for the party he and Jonas were having that evening, Jimmy was downtown going from one shop to another. As he was heading back to his car with an armful of packages, he glanced toward the newest stores in town. They were side by side, their doors painted bright colors, one bright apple green and the other aquamarine. The green door belonged to a coffee shop, the other to a music store.

As Jimmy stepped closer, he read the menu board placed in the window. French vanilla cappuccino. Yum. He glanced to his car, which was about fifty feet away, and back.

The door opened, and the tall, slender man Jimmy had first mistaken for a woman stood there with a warm smile on his beautiful face. His long, rusty-brown hair was loose, with a long braid hanging down the right side from a center part.

“Let me help you with those. Where’s your car?”

“Right down there. It’s the robin’s-egg-blue one.”

“Ah, very pretty. I was admiring it earlier,” the man said as he took most of the packages and they began to walk toward Jimmy’s car. “My name’s Regal Brown. The stores are mine. What’s your name?”

“I’m Jimmy Doyle. I’ve seen you a few times, but I didn’t know it was you who was opening the stores. Are you a musician?” He pulled the fob from his pocket and unlocked the car. They loaded the packages into the backseat.

“I am. I’ll be both selling instruments and teaching people how to use them. I’ve already acquired several students. The library also contacted me to hold evening classes for seniors.”

Jimmy was impressed. “You’ve certainly been busy.”

“You’re the police chief’s mate, aren’t you?”

“I am.” They were walking back toward the coffee shop. Once inside, the wonderful scents of coffee reached his nose. He inhaled deeply. “Ah, I love how it smells in here.” There were two people behind the counter. Jimmy hurried to the counter. “Can I get a large French vanilla cappuccino please?”

When the barista would have asked for the payment, Regal spoke. “It’s on me. My treat. Now, why don’t we sit down over here by the window and we can chat. Our drinks will be brought to us. I’ve met a lot of people, but I’m still working on making friends. Not everyone clicks.”

“That’s true,” Jimmy agreed as he walked to the small round table in front of the window and took a seat. The chair was more comfortable than it appeared. Or he was just glad to be off his aching feet. The babies were due any day now, and their births couldn’t happen soon enough. “Most of the people in Wildflower are friendly. I’ve been here a few years. It took me a while, but I’ve made many good friends. I had some issues to work through. Otherwise, it probably wouldn’t have taken so long.”

One of the baristas arrived with their drinks and a plate with an assortment of baked delicacies, as well as small plates on which to place his choices.
